Gary Peters Drops The Hammer On Elon Musk For DOGE’s ‘Illegal And Unconstitutional’ Government Cuts

In a heated congressional hearing, Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) delivered a scathing critique of President Donald Trump’s administration and its relationship with billionaire Elon Musk, particularly regarding recent cuts to government funding that Peters described as “illegal and unconstitutional.” The hearing, which Peters characterized as a “pep rally” for Trump’s agenda, focused on federal spending oversight, but he expressed deep concern over the committee’s direction and the witnesses invited to speak.

Peters emphasized the importance of bipartisan efforts to eliminate waste and fraud in federal programs, yet he accused Trump and his allies, including Musk, of undermining Congress’s authority to allocate taxpayer dollars. He argued that the Constitution grants Congress the sole power to decide on federal spending, a power he claims has been disregarded by the Trump administration in favor of “unvetted billionaires” with significant conflicts of interest.

The senator pointed out that Musk, who has received hundreds of millions of dollars in government contracts, has been empowered by Trump to make decisions that affect crucial federal programs. Peters warned that the cuts to funding for agencies like USAID could have dire consequences for both domestic and international programs, including support for farmers, child care centers, and community health initiatives.

Highlighting the potential fallout from these actions, Peters raised concerns about the future of essential services that Americans rely on, suggesting that programs like Social Security and Medicare could be next on the chopping block. He criticized the administration for its lack of transparency and accountability, calling for greater oversight of Musk’s involvement in these decisions.

Peters also drew parallels to historical precedents, recalling the bipartisan actions taken during the Nixon administration when Congress asserted its constitutional authority to control appropriations. He lamented what he described as a lack of backbone among current Republican lawmakers, who he believes have allowed Trump to overreach his presidential powers without challenge.

The senator urged his colleagues to take a stand against these “lawless actions” and to ensure that Congress reclaims its role in overseeing federal spending. He expressed disappointment over certain oversight letters that he claimed had been ignored by the committee’s leadership and reiterated the need to call Musk to testify regarding his conflicts of interest in the administration’s decision-making process.

As the hearing unfolded, Peters’s passionate defense of congressional authority set the stage for an ongoing debate about the balance of power between the executive branch and Congress, particularly in the context of financial governance. With the stakes high for essential services and programs, the implications of this political battle could resonate across the nation as lawmakers seek to protect the interests of American families amidst a shifting political landscape.
