‘If you want war we will arm Ukraine’: US NATO ambassador warns Putin (video)

In a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy, the U.S. Ambassador to NATO has issued a stark warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting that if he seeks war, the United States will supply Ukraine with the necessary arms to defend itself. This declaration follows President Trump’s recent agreement with NATO, which stipulates that European nations and Canada will bear the financial burden for military supplies, while the U.S. will manufacture the weaponry.

Ambassador Matt Whitaker emphasized that the days of unlimited U.S. taxpayer funding for Ukraine’s defense are over. Under the new arrangement, European nations will pay for the weapons, while the United States retains the manufacturing role. Whitaker characterized this decision as a strategic move that not only strengthens Ukraine’s defenses but also sends a clear message to Putin: the U.S. is committed to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

In an Oval Office discussion, President Trump highlighted the importance of this new approach, stating that it would help to bring an end to the ongoing conflict. He noted that over the past 18 months, Russia has gained minimally in terms of territory, indicating a lack of success on the battlefield. “If Vladimir Putin wants to fight, we will ensure Ukraine has the means to defend itself,” Whitaker reiterated.

The ambassador’s remarks also revealed a change in NATO’s funding dynamics. Traditionally, the U.S. shouldered a significant portion of the defense costs, but under the new agreement, the financial responsibility will shift to European taxpayers. This reallocation of resources aims to bolster European defense capabilities while allowing the U.S. to focus on broader strategic interests globally.

The potential implications of this policy shift are significant. Analysts expect that Putin’s response will be multifaceted, reacting to both the enhanced military support for Ukraine and the economic pressures from tariffs and sanctions imposed on Russia. This new strategy aligns with the recent NATO summit discussions, where leaders sought to ensure that European allies are more involved in their own defense.

Additionally, Whitaker noted that this move could have beneficial effects on the U.S. economy by revitalizing domestic manufacturing in the defense sector. As production ramps up, particularly in states like Ohio, the initiative could create jobs while simultaneously supporting Ukraine in its ongoing struggle.

President Trump has consistently framed his approach as one of a peacemaker, believing that by empowering Ukraine, the U.S. can help pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. However, he made it clear that any continued aggression from Russia would be met with resolute U.S. support for Ukraine.

The evolving dynamics of this international conflict underscore the importance of NATO unity and the necessity for collaborative defense strategies among member nations. As the situation unfolds, the world will be closely watching how these developments influence the ongoing war and the broader geopolitical landscape.
