Federal budget cuts threaten some LA meal service organizations

Federal budget cuts are poised to devastate meal service organizations in Los Angeles, threatening the lives of some of the region’s most vulnerable residents. Project Angel Food, a crucial provider that delivers over 1.5 million meals annually to the chronically ill, has announced a staggering 30% reduction in funding—equating to a loss of $340,000. The organization, which has been a lifeline since the AIDS epidemic, is now scrambling to secure donations to fill this alarming gap.

“This is not just about numbers; these are lives at stake,” said a representative from Project Angel Food, who emphasized their commitment to continue services despite the financial blow. “Our donors are asking if we can scale back, but the answer is a resounding no. The need is greater than ever.”

The crisis extends beyond Project Angel Food. Other vital programs, including Meals on Wheels, are also facing severe funding cuts, leaving them in a precarious position as they strive to feed those who rely on their services. The looming threat of 22 million people being cut from SNAP benefits adds another layer of urgency to this already critical situation.

As the clock ticks, organizations are calling for immediate action and support from the community. With the federal budget cuts set to take effect soon, the time to respond is now. Without swift intervention, the consequences could be dire, leaving countless individuals without the nourishment they desperately need. The stakes have never been higher—Los Angeles must rally to protect its most vulnerable citizens before it’s too late.
