Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has shared his thoughts on the intense battle for the 2024 F1 world championship, particularly on Lando Norris’ chances of dethroning Max Verstappen. With Norris trailing Verstappen by 70 points following his win at the Dutch Grand Prix, Hamilton believes that while it’s not impossible for Norris to close the gap, it will require some good fortune.
Speaking at Monza, Hamilton said, “There’s a lot of points on the table, so it’s definitely not impossible. Max probably only needs to finish second every race to win at this point, and [Norris] would have to win every single race, and that still wouldn’t be enough, so there’ll need to be some fortune in it.”
Hamilton also expressed excitement about McLaren’s potential in the constructors’ championship, noting that the team is only 30 points behind Red Bull. Reflecting on McLaren’s history, Hamilton added, “What’s really exciting is I think there’s a real chance that McLaren could win the constructors’ title. I think that’s really exciting because I was there when we did win the last constructors’.”
Hamilton is hopeful that the title fight will go down to the wire, providing fans with a thrilling conclusion to the season. “I hope that it goes down to the wire because I think that would be great for the fans,” he said. “But with the performance [McLaren] showed last weekend, maybe they could.”
