Margot Robbie has officially become the highest-paid female actor in Hollywood, thanks to her staggering salary for Greta Gerwig’s live-action Barbie movie. The Australian star, aged 32, received an astonishing USD $12.5 million (AUD $18.1 million) for her role alongside Ryan Gosling in the highly anticipated film, as reported by Variety on Wednesday.
RobƄie’s laтest eɑɾnings exceeds her ɾeρorтed USD$10мιƖƖion (AUD$14.6мιlƖιon) saƖɑɾy foɾ her Ɩɑтesт ƄlocкƄᴜsтer, Biɾds Of Pɾey ιn 2020.
Reportedly, Gosling and Robbie both received the same salary for their roles in the Barbie movie, placing them equally at the 16th position on Variety’s latest list of Hollywood’s top earners.
Following Robbie, the next female actor on the list is Millie Bobby Brown, who earned USD $10 million (AUD $14.6 million) for her starring role in Enola Holmes 2.
Meanwhile, Tom Cruise claimed the top spot on the list, thanks to the success of his blockbuster film Top Gun: Maverick.
Cruise, who not only stars in the sequel but also serves as its producer, is projected to earn over USD $100 million (AUD $144.6 million) from movie ticket sales, his salary, and his share of home entertainment rentals and streaming revenue.
The announcement comes just days after the Barbie movie wrapped up production this week, following four months of filming.
The highly anticipated romantic comedy, based on the renowned Mattel doll line, features Robbie as Barbie and Gosling as her long-time love interest, Ken.
Robbie has long been attached to portray Barbie on the big screen and has promised that the movie will be very different from what people are expecting.
She expressed, “Something like Barbie, where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn’t know you wanted.'”
The Neighbours star aims to provoke “thoughtful conversation” with the film.
Robbie expressed, “Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.”
According to a synopsis on IMDB, the upcoming film revolves around a doll living in ‘BarbieLand’ who is expelled for not being perfect enough and embarks on an adventure in the real world. It is described as a live-action feature film based on the popular line of Barbie toys.
The film is touted as a “fish-out-of-water story about a doll who is ousted from toy society for not being perfect enough,” according to a report by Vulture.
She then realizes that what’s on the inside is more important than her appearance.
Barbie, which holds the distinction of being the first live-action film adaptation in the toy line’s multimedia franchise, is scheduled for release in July 2023.
