Fans demand rule change after controversy during Arsenal vs Crystal Palace

Furious fans have demanded the Premier League to change its rules after the controversy during Arsenal’s clash against Crystal Palace.

On Monday night, Arsenal arrived at Selhurst Park looking to make it two wins out of two for the new season.

Mikel Arteta’s men were faced with a stubborn Palace side and had to rely on Martin Odegaard’s penalty to secure a narrow 1-0 victory.

During the match, Gunners defender Takehiro Tomiyasu was sent off after receiving two yellow cards.

The Japanese international was booked for time wasting in the first half before being shown a second yellow for tangling with Palace forward Jordan Ayew.

However, the replays showed that Tomiyasu was arguably harshly treated in both incidents.

As a result, fans have been calling for a rule change which will allow VAR to intervene in yellow card decisions.

One said: “The fact VAR can’t get involved in yellow card decisions is such a joke when the technology is there. Arsenal also cannot appeal it, as it’s a second yellow. Flawed system.”

Another tweeted: “Another reason why VAR should intervene in second yellow card situations. This is not even a foul by Tomiyasu, imo.”

A third fan added: “Second yellow card for this? That’s disgraceful. I know VAR can’t get involved, but why? A joke.”

Someone else wrote: “VAR not being allowed to get involved in a second yellow card is nonsense.”

Whilst a fifth commented: “If that’s a yellow card, we may as well just pack up and go home. VAR should be able to intervene there!”

Speaking after the match, Gunners boss Arteta said: “The new rules is one thing. The new rules that I don’t know where they are and they haven’t communicated, that’s something very different.

“But we will adapt. Today we had to win it in this context and we’ve done it.”

Tomiyasu will now miss Arsenal’s London derby against Fulham on Saturday.
