American Idol judge Katy Perry has been called out for a comment she made when a young mother auditioned for the show.
Sara Beth Liebe gave great performances of both Elton John’s “Benny and the Jets” and Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good,” but what really got Perry going was finding out that Liebe, who is 25, is a mom of three. In shock, the “Firework” singer pretend fainted against fellow judge Luke Bryant, prompting Liebe to say, “If Katy lays on the table, I think I’m gonna pass out,” according to Us Weekly. Perry responded, “Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much.”
The comment apparently attracted enough attention that Liebe decided to respond in a TikTok video, repeatedly calling the line a “joke” (as in, with quotation marks) and characterizing Perry’s words as “not super kind.”
In the video, which has the comments turned off, Liebe says, “I mean, it was embarrassing to have that on TV and it was hurtful and, you know, that’s that…. I think women supporting and uplifting other women is so cool, and I think that mom-shaming is super lame, and I think that it’s hard enough to be a mom and it’s hard enough to be a woman. And I also wanted to take this opportunity to say that I see all of the young moms and just moms in general who have commented on all of the videos and posts and everything, and I just wanted to say that I see you and I hear you and I am grateful for you and you’re worthy and keep loving your babies. Nobody deserves to feel crappy about that.”
Katy Perry, who shares one daughter with Orlando Bloom, has not commented on the dust-up.
