American Idol winner Noah Thompson thinks Katy Perry and John Mayer were married (They were NOT)
American Idol 2022 winner Noah Thompson hopped on social media recently to recount a funny story from his time on American Idol. But he remains confused over the details!
Top 11 week had a Judges Song Contest theme in which each of the judges–Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan–chose a song for each of the contestants. Producers presented all three songs to the singers without revealing who chose it. In the end, the judge with the most song picks “won.”
After the performance, host Ryan Seacrest asked the contestant to reveal which judge they believed ultimately chose the song they picked and performed. In Noah’s case, he sang John Mayer’s “Heartbreak Warfare” which HE naively believed was chosen for him by Katy. Nope, and for obvious reasons (except to Noah. Heh). The two used to date for two drama-filled years.

“I’mma tell y’all a little bit about the time I embarrassed the s— out of Katy Perry,” Noah begins his story. “It’s kinda bad, but it’s funny as hell too.”
Noah mentions that he was sitting next to fellow contestant Nicolina and when he told her he thought Katy picked the song, he said, “She looked at me like are you stupid?” He was a little confused, but not deterred! When he said on stage that he thought maybe Katy picked the song, the look on her face was priceless. “Noah, I feel like maybe you should Wikipedia me.” she went on, “It’s a great song…I can’t talk anymore.” Noah, still confused, replied “Sorry, Sorry” as Katy jokingly left her seat and Luke stood up to reveal himself as the song picker.
I didn’t realize they were freaking married, said Noah
“I still didn’t really understand what the hell was going on to be honest, but I kinda got it…” says Noah, who soon makes it obvious he never DID look up Katy on Wikipedia, “I didn’t realize they were freaking married bro, I was like s—”
He continues, “I didn’t pay attention to that stuff, man” And apparently, he still doesn’t! Because Katy only DATED John Mayer, and so far has only been married once, to Russell Brand, between 2010 and 2012. She is currently engaged to her daughter Daisy Dove’s father, Orlando Bloom.
Unfortunately, Katy’s Wikipedia entry might have confused Noah even more. Ironically, there is no “Personal” section for Katy as there is for most public figures. But the sidebar lists the pertinent timeline of Katy’s life. However, a person needs to dig through the massive entry to find that Katy’s on and off relationship with Mayer started in 2012 and ended in 2014. Here is a handy timeline.
Fans set Noah straight in the comments section: “She wasn’t married to that tool, but she did date him for far too long. That segment was pure gold, though!” said one commenter. “She wasn’t married to him but had a bad bad break up from him,” shared another.
Noah teases new music on social media
In the meantime, the country singer is living in Nashville and playing concert dates after releasing his debut EP Middle of God Knows Where.
Earlier this month, Noah teased a new song, asking his fans if he should release it. “Now it’s a “Road that I can’t go down”, should I drop this or nah?? Lemme know whatcha think #newmusiccoming #staytuned,” Noah wrote on Instagram alongside a snippet of the track.
The upbeat song lyrics go “You could tell me that it’s all good, tell me lies that we could really get it right with another round, I know the way this thing is gonna go, been there and your love took a toll and now it’s a road that I can’t go down…”
