It was the tweet that broke the internet in early 2023 – and even managed to slyly sue LIV Golf.
“I’m ready to play the ACTUAL PGA TOUR next week,” Woods posted during the Phoenix Open, referring to the Genesis Invitational.
The Riviera would be his first outing since The Open and his first start on a non-major tour since the final round of the 2020 Zozo Championship.
Woods, who has never won at Genesis, carded rounds of 69, 74, 67 and 73 to finish at 1-under par for 45th.Later, when asked where he will play next, he said that he is mainly focused on playing in all four majors.
This turned out to be stressful though. At the Masters, he maintained his streak of never missing a round as a professional, but Woods was clearly uncomfortable on the third day and was forced to retire.
Shortly thereafter, he announced that he underwent subtalar fusion procedures to treat post-traumatic arthritis. This ruled Woods out for the remainder of the PGA Tour season.
But now he’s back and believes he can play semi-regularly again on the US circuit. After admitting his return was “rusty” at the Hero World Challenge in 2023, Woods reiterated his “realistic” belief that he can play golf once a month in 2024.
“I think I can get into that rhythm,” Woods said. “I think I’ve got a couple of weeks to recover, a week to develop, so there’s no reason why I can’t get into that rhythm. It’s just getting better.
“Woods then played in the PNC Championship in Orlando with son Charlie to complete his competitive return to action in 2023.The focus now turns to 2024 and his preparations for the Masters.
