Israeli actress Gal Gadot has criticized the silence surrounding reports of sexual violence committed by Hamas during the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel.
She also highlighted the danger faced by female hostages who have been held captive for almost three months. In an impassioned message posted on her Instagram on Sunday, Gadot expressed her disappointment in the lack of response from certain Western countries, including the U.S. and the U.K., to the reports of sexual violence by Hamas.
Hollywood figures like Julianna Margulies have also questioned the silence of women’s advocacy groups regarding the horrific cases of rape, sexual torture, and mutilation of women by Hamas.
The United Nations has also faced criticism for failing to speak out against the acts of sexual violence during the attack and for not ensuring the safety of female hostages held by Hamas.
Gadot called on women and their allies to take action, urging various groups, including the UN, to work towards securing the release of the female hostages to prevent further acts of sexual violence.
The actress has been vocal about the Oct. 7 events and has used her social media platform to advocate for the hostages’ release. On Oct. 12, Gadot, along with other celebrities and entertainment executives, signed an open letter showing support for Israel and calling for the return of the hostages.
