Kansas City Chiefs star QB — and new constant in the NFL playoffs — Patrick Mahomes says the league’s new overtime rules are just fine with him.
“Your job is to find a way to win the game, no matter how long it takes,” Mahomes said in an interview with Yahoo Finance Presents.
This week, the NFL’s 32 clubs passed a rule change that would allow both teams to get possession of the ball in overtime at least once.
The league’s decision comes on the heels of Mahomes’ Chiefs rallying against the Buffalo Bills in this year’s AFC divisional round. And then in overtime, the Chiefs scored first, won and then moved onto the next round of the playoffs where they lost against the Cincinnati Bengals (who then lost to the Rams in the Super Bowl).
Since 2010, there have been 12 postseason overtime games in the NFL, according to the New York Times. The team that won the coin toss in overtime went on to win 10 of those 12 games, the New York Times notes.
“I’m sure there’ll be moments where you feel like it’s a good decision. But then there will be moments when you score that touchdown first and you feel like it’s a bad one. So you just go out there and play and try to win the game whatever way,” Mahomes said.
Indeed, Mahomes is finding many ways to win off the court when it comes to his budding business empire (as he refers to it as).
After signing a record-setting 10-year, $503 million contract in 2020, Mahomes purchased a minority stake in the Kansas City Royals. He then invested an undisclosed sum for a stake in surging wearable device company Whoop. The tech unicorn has an estimated valuation of about $3.6 billion.
Mahomes also has endorsement deals with athletic-wear maker Adidas, sports recovery device seller Hyperice and supplement seller BioSteel. He is a share-owner in NetJets rival Airshare. The company is one of the nation’s largest private aviation companies, with Mahomes using it to navigate his busy schedule.
Mahomes says that schedule is extra busy right now — he just got married this month and is a new dad. But he remains locked in on winning another Super Bowl.
“That’s the goal, always. And I think we got the team to do it,” Mahomes said.
